Peshawar,-Pakistan’s largest religious political party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), has once again elected Maulana Fazlur Rehman as its Emir (President) for a fifth consecutive term, continuing his unchallenged leadership within the party. The central general council of the JUI gathered in Peshawar, where party members had to cast their votes to elect their leadership for the next five years.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman, a key figure in Pakistan’s political landscape, was re-elected unopposed, reinforcing his dominant position within the party. Alongside him, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari was also re-elected unopposed as General Secretary, both securing their leadership roles for another five-year term.
The election, held during the party’s Central General Assembly, attracted representatives from across Pakistan, further demonstrating the JUI’s significant national influence, particularly in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The JUI, under Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s leadership, commands substantial street power, with a large network of religious seminaries aligned with the party’s ideology.
Once a close ally of major political forces like the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Maulana Fazlur Rehman has since distanced himself from both and now positions the JUI in the opposition. His continued leadership reflects the party’s steadfast support for his vision and the pivotal role he plays in shaping religious and political discourse in Pakistan.
