Intense unseasonal rainfall, lightning, rock falls, and floods across the Hindu Kush region of Pakistan and Afghanistan have taken the lives of 100 people over the past few days.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, Noristan, Kunar, and Badakhshan provinces of Afghanistan have been badly affected by the recent rains. The impact has been devastating with huge loss to human lives and properties as well as damage to infrastructure.
The floods have resulted in a significant loss of life in both countries of the Hindu Kush region. According to officials, 33 people lost their lives in the KP province of Pakistan while in Afghanistan the figure crossed 66. Hundreds of residents have been displaced from their homes and are in urgent need of shelter, food, and medical assistance.
Local authorities in both countries, supported by government departments and the military, have launched rescue and relief operations in the affected areas. Emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate displaced families, and efforts are underway to provide them with essential supplies.
The relief efforts are being hampered by difficult terrain, damaged infrastructure, and limited access to some of the worst-affected areas.
More precipitation is expected in the coming days which triggers more danger.
