A maternity hospital in Badakhshan, operated by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been forced to close its doors. The facility, a critical healthcare provider in the region, halted operations due to severe financial constraints and an acute shortage of medical supplies. The closure has left residents without access to maternal and child healthcare services.
Quoting the local officials at Badakhshan, Afghan media reported that over 70 staff members, including several specialists, have been unemployed due to the hospital’s closure. Local officials said the hospital has been unable to operate for a week and is officially closed.
People of the area have appealed for assistance from the national government and international aid organizations to mitigate the healthcare crisis. Patients are being redirected to hospitals in neighboring provinces struggling to accommodate the influx.
