Massoud Pezeshkian, known for his reformist approach, has been elected Iran’s new president, beating his hardline conservative rival Saeed Jalili.
An official vote count put Pezeshkian as the winner with 16.3m ballots to Jalili’s 13.5m.
Voter turnout in the second round stood at 49.8 percent, according to official figures.
Dr Pezeshkian secured 53.3% of the more than 30 million votes counted and his rival Saeed Jalili could get 44.3%.
The run-off came after no candidate secured a majority in the first round of election held on 28 June, which saw a historically low voter turnout of 40%.
After winning the elections Masoud Pezeshkian in to swon in as Iran’s 9th president.
Pezeshkian, 69, had served as a lawmaker in the Iranian Parliament for five 4-year terms.
He was also the vice speaker of Iran’s 10th Parliament. The president-elect served as Iran’s minister of health for four years during the administration of then-President Mohammad Khatami.
The early election was held on June 28 across Iran with the participation of four candidates.
Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili won more votes than other hopefuls; meanwhile, the runoff election was planned for a week later as none of the candidates managed to get the majority of votes to become the president of Iran.
